WRBC 2008

Hi.

I'm liveblogging from the Western Regional Barista Championships.

Check it here at Twitchy.

March 26, 2008 09:14 AM

bike > car

6:50am: Wake up eerily before alarm clock, realize car is parked in a 7am spot. Move car. w00t! no ticket.
7:50am: Concern about making it to work for 9am meeting with planned bike ride, rush around house, realize bike need prepping, etc.
8:10am: Leave house.
8:20am: Arrive 4 Barrel
8:30am: Leave 4 Barrel
8:48am: Arrive Work

8:52am: Realize that biking is, in fact, faster than driving.
8:59am: Also realize that 9am meeting was yesterday. Woot!

:)

SXSW Greatest Hits:

SXSW Greatest Hits:
* J / Henri / Josh Duty / Fernando / Caitlin clearly win for best possee
* Octopus Project for best local band
* Preston Craig for best DJ
* Silje Nes for best randomly-happened-upon-band-I-now-love
* Grand Archives for only CD purchased with my own money
* Other Music for best party; the setting of the French Legation was just absolutely perfect.
* Crystal Castles for best band

South By was a huge party and it had a bunch of corporate stuff, and it had a
bunch of douchebags, but it also had some amazingly nice people, we had a
great home base, and I really liked driving around in a Jeep.

SXSW Update 3

Fernando & J got up early and ran off to a Metal show, but i didn't have it in
me, so I slept in, made awesome coffee that J brought (A+ for the solid
stainless steel french press. No glass to break, no plastic to leech, and
easy as all hell to clean) which really has me turned on to making home coffee
now. I ran over to Whole Foods again (vegetables, multivitamins and water.
repeat. survive), then was trying to get a parking spot down by Mohawk, but
it was so bad that I crossed the freeway and parked way the hell up the hill.
Which was right next to the French Legation, where Other Music was having
their party. So I went in!

The French Legation is way up on top of a hill with a view, antebellum
buildings, and massive lawns. It was perfect. People were Brooklyn/SF indie
crew with their specific style, and nice, and J Mascis (!!!)
was jamming like a maniac in the tent. I sat down and was blown away. Words
can't really describe the wall of sound he was putting out. And then it was
over. The venue was just so perfect; I wandered over to the other stage
which was just outside on a gentle grass covered hill.

I laid in the grass, thought about the fact that life might not be so bad, and
then the cutest boy & girl got up on stage and played sweet songs with
whisking drums, with adorable broken english. I heard their whole set,
thanked them later, and was just generally washed over with a pleasant
euphoria of niceness. I love them now. "Silje Nes" is their name. (maybe
that's her name?)

For a /total/ change of pace, I ran over to Mohawk, dealt with a crazy long
line of a bajillion people, heard Cut Copy from outside, then thanks to Lydia,
made it inside for Sons & Daughters and then Clipse. Clipse came on like 5
minutes late (who cares?) and for some reason thought that people were pissed
to have been waiting (I don't think we were?) and so they said:

"Yeah, we're late. Yeah, we just got here 5 minutes ago. We tryin to get our shit together. What, y'all gonna rob us?"

It was awesome. They were on it. The whole Re Up Gang came out and they
all did their thing. Way good show. I wish I could say more!

SXSW Update 2

Man, it's beautiful here in Austin. Fernando & I got up early and did a
little moped repair (grease before breakfast! woot!) which was fun, then rode
over for what was sadly my only Migas of the trip. I met a dude named Pony.
Yup. Fernando & Pony seem to be the nightlife impressarios of Austin.
They have a blog. Check it.

I can see why people love it here so much, and since I'm on the East Side, I
also understand last week's King of The Hill episode about white hipsters
moving into Latino neighborhoods and gentrifying them. It's all post-war
perfect sized houses with cute little lawns. Totally a good vibe of people
working hard and slacking hard.

I've had some interesting conversations with people about what the low cost of
living allows, and interestingly enough, it feels like people are constrained
by the freedom. I really related to that; the lack of structure or need to
hustle (cf: nyc) really led me to become pretty apathetic in my between-
working time in the past. Its a lesson I want to not forget, and being
reminded is helpful.

...

We drove over Waterloo to get our pal Caitlin a wristband (totally ended up
not needed them; all the good parties were no-pay), and I got eat some leaves
at ye olde mecca of Whole Foods. Then off to the belly of the beast off 6th
street, near the convention center around 4 (let's hear it for daylight
savings! woot!) to check out the Fader Fort. Fader & Levis got together to
do a popup store and huge concert space; it was rad. We saw some bands. I
wish I remembered which they were, but I'm sure they were awesome. We snuck
pals in with wristband schenangins. whatever.

I met up with my pal David Peris from the old Sony days there, and that was
really great; he's in Houston with a baby and a Hummer, so we had a lot to
catch up on! There was free beer. I drank it. It was delicious. I got some
skinny purple jeans. I hated myself and laughed hilariously.

Then a misfire. We went to a SXSW official event at Karma, a nightclub, to
see some famous DJ that didn't come on and the crowd sucked and friends of
friends sucked, so we left. Life's too short. We had heard about this
late-night party way the hell out on Cesar Chavez that Red Bull was putting
on, so we trekked the hell out there, everyone got too drunk on Red Bull, and
we danced. The setup was kind of awesome; there was a HUGE disco ball
hanging from the top of a fire engine crane, an airplane hanger, and just
generally felt like a corporate co-opted version of a Burningman party. I was
scandalized at first and felt violated, but then realised that it is what it
is. Not much I could do about it, so I drank their booze, watched Octupus
Project do an amazing show. They asked Henri to be their MC, and he did that
for the rest of the week, and that was really random and awesome.

AND THEN everyone got hungry. And everyone thought it would be a good idea to
have fast food. And I drove to Wendys. And I bought a dozen hamburgers. And
everyone ate one or two or three, and they were f*ing delicious (until the
next morning when everyone was horribly sick, but that's another day!! haha).
We fed the bouncers and the bartenders, pals and more. We were heros. No,
Burger Heros. :P

SXSW Update 1

Hi. These are all out of order, but I'll try my best to keep chronological consistency. Its Saturday morning-ish and I'm sitting outside on Henri's front porch, watching the world go by as I wake up. I've got an armful of wristbands and hand stamps and temporary tattoos. Its really nice here.

So, we got to Austin on Tuesday afternoon. Flight was good & easy. When we landed, the airport was overrun with rockers. It was awesome. I had an hilarious back-and-forth with the rental car guy, and at the very last minute he totally set us up, and I've been driving this open top red Jeep Wrangler, squealing tires and having a blast in the balmy weather.

The plan had been to get in Tuesday night, hang out, chill with this gang of J's pals, drink some beers and take it easy. That wasn't exactly how it turned out.

We had an amazing Japanese dinner at Uchi, and came to home base @ Henri's house. Fernando ran upstairs and started playing huge beats. Josh showed up. Caitlin showed up. And just like that, we were all RARRING to go, so we went off to a party at Mohawk because we'd heard Moby was the secret superstar dj.

We got there way early, but Lone Star was (free/cheap/don't remember), so we hung out by the heat lamp and chatted about Donald Judd and other good things in the world. Moby wandered in, we gave the nod, and there was hanging out for a while longer. Fernando showed with a bevy of cute lady friends (how does he do it?) Moby played the hits, and was generally a star .... UNTIL he passed off the decks to the next guy who blew my fucking socks off. He played floor fillers that I didn't know, interesting oontz, and the party was GOING OFF THE HOOK. It was wicked good. I was dancing on stage, madness ensued, and then. And then I looked down and saw that he was sitting in a wheelchair and has very limited mobility/use of his hands, but he was mixing and clearly the star of the best show I would see all week.

I ran into him at the Fader Fort party the next day and chatted him up; his name is Preston, and he's from Atlanta, but that's all I know. Anyone else out there know who he is? This is him in the lower corner of the first picture in the purple hoodie.

UPDATE: His name is Preston Craig, and his crew is Kiss Atlanta. Awesome.

Here's me & my gang during the show. (that's me off to the right with my gloves on cause it was f*ing cold out)

SXSW

Hi-

I'm going to Austin in the morning to go hear some rock shows for a week, see my
college roommate for his birthday, and hang with a bunch of new pals. I am very excited for daytime beer drinking, sunshine and etc.

Here's a list of all the concerts I want to see and a corresponding schedule for the whole event in awesome web2.0-ness. Please email me if you see shows listed that I should see but am not planning to see!!

Also, I'll be twittering like a mofo, so find me there (I bet you can guess my username!)

W00t!
