YAY!! October 19, 2005 11:50 PMUpdates Galore!Hi. Sorry, I haven't updated in a really long time. My little consulting company has taken off with one big client, and I've been wildly busy there, while also doing my best to give lots and lots of love to my elly. Welcome back! We ran away for a vacation to the Midwest, to see pals, visit memories, and otherwise tool around in our econobox (nee' "shitbox") rental car du jour. Please read on to see glorious entires about Camp Lucky, where Allenn fills up 2.5 gallons of Apple Cider in a bladder, so that he can carry it across country (no word on if he was detained at airport security!!), an unexpected Den of Iniquity in Grand Rapids, Michigan, and some grand lounging at the Cottage. But first, some fall color, since it was all around us, in glorious ways:
October 19, 2005 11:47 PMCottageHi. Lots of pictures. Filenames say most of it, so I'll include them here today.
October 19, 2005 11:46 PMGrand RapidsThe day that Lucky ended, elly & I drove North & West from Kalamazoo towards the cottage, without coffee. We woke up late in the Swallows Lodge, having been up until 4am. I thougt that Camp was going to go on throughout the day, but it turned out that we were the last to get up, and last to leave, etc. We mopped the floors valiantly (after I got a squeezing lesson from the proprietor), and made sandwiches on the trunk of the econobox. It was fun, but hazy. Along the way, I got off of the expressway in Grand Rapids, figuring that it's a decently sized city, and really just hoping for a Starbucks (eww) at that point. We drove the deserted streets, marveling at their niceness (paving stones, cute shops, nice vibe), but very confused about the fact that EVERYTHING was closed, and there were no people. It was almost that creepy post-apoclyptic feeling. As my ability to function rapidy decreased, we spotted a woman with a drink walking down the street, and elly sprang from the car to ask where it had come from. Even though the directions weren't quite right, with some help from my patent-pending coffeeshop-radar-foo, we managed to get to this cute, great little coffeeshop called "Morningstar 75." The employees were snarky, and wore black. I loved it. Have a look:
October 19, 2005 11:45 PMCamp Lucky!Camp Lucky seems to have been many things over the years. I've only gone a few times, but it is always filled with nice people. This year, there were no shotguns, no public sex at firepits, no water slides, and no real drunkeness. There was, however: swimming, canoeing, sailing, sauna-ing, and skinny dipping. There were camp fires, smores, tasty breakfasts (even though I slept through one of them!), pirate jokes, and lots of walks in the woods. [ there are TONS more pictures to be seen in /days ]
October 09, 2005 01:26 AMa long time agoGreg & I lived here:
It was a great house, with a huge garage for the Lincoln, a back yard with room for a hammock under the apricot tree. I loved it very much, and I'm so glad I left. *contentment* October 07, 2005 12:24 PMre entryToday, I walked up 24th street in Noe Valley without my current pangs of sadness about how our old hood has become ever more yuppie and unavailable to me. I visited the old key shop, managed to resist the siren's call of Streetlight Records, and checked the mail. I got the package I'd been waiting for, had a nice talk with the guys at the shop, and bought a stack of red and a stack of blue plastic cups for morning smoothie enjoyment on-the-go. As I walked back to the car, I saw the metermaid just a few car lengths past the biodieseldunnymobile, and felt happy that I had overpaid that whole shiny quarter for insurance against her evil wiles. Somehow, I had the clarity of mind to look to resuce a fellow parker nearby and scanned all visible meters for the <blink>Expired</blink> sign of doom. The car I saw was a fancy blue BMW, with vanity plates, and I acutally took a moment to consider if I wanted to help someone who was "rich" or whatever. I guess the goal is to always rescue the starving arts-school student who will really appreciate the $30, instead of someone for whom it is just an inconvenience. Then I realised how absurd it was to evaluate who I wanted to do something randomly nice for, tossed a dime in the meter, and went about my walk. As I wandered, I shuffled the red & blue cups so that we'll get a different color every time we drink. Won't that be fun? |
