Weekend At The Cottage

My two favorite places on Earth are Black Rock City and my cottage in Michigan. I've spent at least some time there every single summer (except for one) of my life. I managed to grab a last minute flight to go there for a few days in 2004. I'm really happy when I get to go there because I gain a whole new perspective on whatever challenges or decisions I have to make in my life.

I can remember deciding what high school to attend while I was at the cottage, pondering jobs to take, and now trying to figure out what the hell to do with my life. I never know what I will feel when I get there, but I always know that there will be some revelation about something. It is a really magical place for me; there are deep woods, and long open beaches, with a nice house in between!

My favorite view there is unphotographed, and I prefer to keep it that way. Because the cottage is off in the middle of nowhere, there's really no light polution at night except for the neighbors. On non weekend nights, there really aren't any neighbors, so the sky is REALLY black. This Sunday night was especially good, since there was only a sliver of moon out. I stood outside at 3am, taking an outside shower, and could see the entirety of the Milky Way, with the naked eye. Yay stars :)

I took a boatload of pictures, but here's a small sampling:

Le Cottage!

Beach! Lake!

It is really unbelievable that the marm grass is this deep. I remember planting seedlings by hand on the dune in high water years, when we feared the house would fall into the lake!

Blue Spruces!

Out to the lake in the early evening light. (also, I used to be taller than the tree on the left!)

Pat & Jenny

While I was in Michigan, I drove halfway across the state to have lunch in a neat place with Pat, Jenny & Lily! They are some of my favorite people! Lily is so big now!

ob. baby shot

Lily thinks that you're Number One!

Pat thinks Lily should sliiiiide!

On the way back these kids all got up on the billboard for no apparent reason. Can anyone explain this to me?

Also, later that day, Will took some pictures.

Media Updates

So, a bunch of people have asked me lately about what I'm listening to. Here's my take on the current state of media that I give a shit about: (oh yeah, I'm reading books too, but that comes in a later post)

Movies I Want To See

  • Criminal (Maggie Gyllenhaal / John C. Reilly)
  • THX 1138 on the big screen
  • The Motorcycle Diaries (maybe I should know more about Che)
  • Garden State
Music I am Listening to
  • Nightmares on Was Carboot Soul
  • Weekend Players Pursuit of Happiness (yes, still!)
  • Proem Socially Inept
  • Laird The Real Low Down
  • Laron Motions of Mutation
  • Erelend Oye DJ Kicks
  • Metric Static Anonymity
New Music that I Anticipate Liking
  • Brian Wilson Smile
  • U2's new single "Vertigo"
  • Gwen Stefani's solo release. Producers/remixers make me verrry curious
  • new Beck album. Dust Brothers as producers again! who knows?
  • Buck 65
New York things to Do, when I am back
  • MOMA opens 2004/11/20
  • Tom Otterness on Broadway (The guy that makes the really neat bronze sculptures as seen in the 14th Street A/C station)
Telling it like it is:
Seen on signboard out in front of the 500 Club today: "Happy Hour from 5-6pm, Come get Drunk. $1.50 PBRs"

Also, I really should fix those brakes on my bike, huh?

Burningman Pics

ok ok. you all want pictures. here's the first batch, unedited. there's a whole story and lots more polaroids, but I have to scan those in. here goes.
On our way out of town, we had the quintessential San Francisco Burning Man Departure Experience (tm). 18 errands, way later than expected, and Aaron's bike fell off of his car into the street. Here's us getting it fixed. All ended well, but it was humourous at the time.

I had a rough week getting physically acclimated, but on Saturday, we headed out for requisite photo gathering. Behold: one Aaron, one *cute* mobile astrologer!

There was a giant pendulum in center camp. This picture doesn't do it justice.

Imagine these blowing billowing clouds of fire into the air. yeah. hell yeah

This camp served to save us many times. In our first night's bike ride, we emerged from a few hours of sensory-deprivation- white-out to find it getting built, and my favorite San Francisco DJ spinning records in ways I'd never heard before. Amazing!
Also, my favorite mobile astrologer is seen here, announcing the current astrological conditions. (moon in Taurus?).
Then, later in the week, when things were sort of iffy on burn night, we came upon the same place, to find elly's favorite San Francisco DJ spinning the roof off in some seriously tribal (and HOTT) ways!

NOTE for SF DENIZENS: This Friday, 20040910, both of these guys are spinning with Freq Nasty in a voter-drive party all night long. You want to be there. Really. Trust me. http://www.an-ten-nae.net/.

One of my favorite installations was Jadu Beta, a large inflatable setup that we had the pleasure of previeewing at Volume in NYC (with Lorin!) a few months back. It was really impressive, and my pal Gavin helped set it up! I'm sad I didn't get to see him on the Playa. (of note to those that know me, Gavin bequeathed me the "horny cowboy hat" that you always see me in out there)

Another of the inflatable projects that I dug was Starmageddon. Nifty keen!

Two of the many art cars that have inspired me from year to year. I hope that next time I go to the desert, I go in service. I really want to go and give things to the newbies, and I hope it's through a fun art car project with elly!

Requisite Porta Potty shot

David Best's Temples really need no words.

Way out in Deep Space, past The Man, and past the Temple, is a tree.

And finally, with the tree was a meditation chamber that directly faced the sunrise. it was gorgeous and calming and great to sit in. Also, this is a self portrait. :)

Items not photographed that I wish I had:

  • The Seven Sisters
  • Side Streets a/k/a The Suburbs
  • Brane village
  • Blacklight strings behind our camp
  • The Buzz Saw art car
