re entry

Today, I walked up 24th street in Noe Valley without my current pangs of sadness about how our old hood has become ever more yuppie and unavailable to me. I visited the old key shop, managed to resist the siren's call of Streetlight Records, and checked the mail. I got the package I'd been waiting for, had a nice talk with the guys at the shop, and bought a stack of red and a stack of blue plastic cups for morning smoothie enjoyment on-the-go.

As I walked back to the car, I saw the metermaid just a few car lengths past the biodieseldunnymobile, and felt happy that I had overpaid that whole shiny quarter for insurance against her evil wiles. Somehow, I had the clarity of mind to look to resuce a fellow parker nearby and scanned all visible meters for the <blink>Expired</blink> sign of doom. The car I saw was a fancy blue BMW, with vanity plates, and I acutally took a moment to consider if I wanted to help someone who was "rich" or whatever. I guess the goal is to always rescue the starving arts-school student who will really appreciate the $30, instead of someone for whom it is just an inconvenience.

Then I realised how absurd it was to evaluate who I wanted to do something randomly nice for, tossed a dime in the meter, and went about my walk. As I wandered, I shuffled the red & blue cups so that we'll get a different color every time we drink. Won't that be fun?
