Chicago

Christmastime in Chicago. I don't really know christmas any other way. There's so much tradition here, so much ritual, it comforts me.

After my dad picked me up from the airport on christmas eve, we drove around all sorts of random side streets of neighborhoods that I'd never been in. The feeling was so uniquely Chicago, even though I was in unfamiliar places. It was comforting to be drive around in that way.

(side note: I *really* need to renew my driver's license. email me if you live in CA, please!)

That evening, we got home. saw mom, chilled for a bit, and then went to the Unitarian Church for Christmas Vespers services. I'm not a big church-going person, but most every of the last 30 or so years, I've gone to this service. It features the Chicago Children's Choir (which I always felt rejected by) singing all sorts of holiday songs (but always "Silent Night" and "Go Tell It On The Mountain"). The service was gorgeous, and full of pagentry. The Unitarians are so open and accepting of everyone, it warms my heart. Isn't /that/ what religion is supposed to do? accept people, and warm their hearts? What's wrong with the rest of the world?

Anyways, we lit and held candles to illuminate the massive gothic church as the lights went out, and we all sat in silence, I considered what I have to be thankful for in life (challenges from loved ones, and affection from others), while Olivia sat next to me (she's about 6), and considered that hot wax really does hurt when it drips on your hand.

After services, we had big family dinner with my best friends' family, so we were 8 around the dining room table, and it was nice. We talked about things that didn't matter, and about people that do. They left, and I slept like a baby in the perfectly cold room with a big warm comforter.

Christmas day was nice; full of gifts from family, and visits from other family. I had some problems surviving the day, but Liz was on the phone to love me. That made it all more managable. Then I was able to give some support to someone else who I love, in her hour of need. That made both of us comforted.

(insert oblique public reference to really private event in some way)
